Why I Love Sports: Blog Overview

This is my first blog post! Very exciting. So I guess what’s customary is to give you a cliff’s notes version on myself and the purpose of this blog.

My name is Samantha and I am from Pennsylvania, which just so happens to be the best state in the U.S. I went to Penn State University for undergraduate school and Syracuse University for my Master’s degree. I moved to Chicago in May of 2009.

Over the course of my travels I have found a great thing that can connect tons of people:  sports. I think sports are kind of a conundrum. Being a fan of a team sometimes has no rhyme or reason;  you root for a team because it’s a tradition in your family, you live in an area where you get a specific team, you were born in a specific city, your an alum of the school, etc. etc.

The interesting thing about sports is that the impossible happens…and quite often. The underdog wins, a game goes into six overtimes, a player is playing a former coach who never believed in him etc. etc. The drama that is played out on a sports field is an incredible escape from life and just fascinating.

I also find it interesting that, no matter what, people will root for their teams– they will get in verbal arguments, bet money and have a bad day when they are doing poorly.  My team of choice is the Pittsburgh Steelers.  I have black and gold running through my veins, and I will die-hard root for them until the day I die. When I was a sophomore in college, Pittsburgh went to (and won!) the Superbowl in Detroit, I road tripped there to just be in the same vicinity of them. I went to Pittsburgh this past year to be in the city when we won AND even when they have a less than stellar season, much like THIS season, I will still watch every second, of every game.

The thing is, just like everyone has teams they inexplicably root for, there are teams that people just don’t like for no reason as well. (Read: Michigan Wolverines)

So the purpose of this blog is to discuss sports–and not just the popular ones. Expect some coverage on men’s lacrosse, soccer and my personal favorite, collegiate softball. Expect opinions on current happenings on the sports world, and more importantly, expect my college bowl game predictions tomorrow 🙂

What teams are you die hard for? What teams do you despise? and more importantly, What is it about sports that gets you going?!

Totally agree…I’m an orange and blue gal, even when the Bears, ILLINI, or my high school teams act like winning isn’t important!

Agree! A team defines your loyalty and character! It creates a bond with others that transends race, gender, age and religion. Go Steelers!!!!
